A scientific history
A scientific history of care
Bizarre Tropicals is South Africa's premier carnivorous plant and tissue culture nursery, meticulously curated by Jaco Van Den Berg. From tissue-cultured sundews to show-stopping Nepenthes, we grow and ship living specimens for collectors across the country.
Macro photography meets Southern Hemisphere culture notes on every genus page — light, water, substrate, humidity, dormancy, and feeding written for real benches and terrariums, not generic houseplant advice.
We propagate in-house, acclimate stock before shipping, and prioritise plants that arrive ready for your collection.
The laboratory
Science in service of nature.
Tissue culture lets us multiply rare carnivorous plants under sterile conditions — preserving genetics without wild collection or poaching. Every flask in our lab is a living archive of species that might otherwise vanish from cultivation.
From initiation to weaning, we track each line for vigour, trueness to name, and pathogen-free growth before plants ever reach the bench. That is how Bizarre Tropicals supplies collectors with ethically propagated stock you can grow with confidence.

A message from Jaco Van Den Berg.
I have spent years studying and growing carnivorous genera across South Africa — from windowsill Drosera to climate-controlled Nepenthes. What began as a collector's obsession became a nursery built on science, patience, and respect for these plants in the wild.
At Bizarre Tropicals, every species we list reflects hands-on culture: the humidity, the dormancy timing, the substrate that actually works on a Gauteng bench. If you are building a collection, I want you to succeed — not just make a purchase.
