Frequently asked questions

Do you ship nationwide?

Yes. We ship living plants across South Africa using specialized botanical couriers who understand temperature-sensitive freight. Shipping is calculated at checkout based on your destination and order size.

Are these plants safe for pets?

Carnivorous plants are generally not toxic to cats and dogs, but the traps are delicate. Curious paws can damage pitchers and snap-traps permanently. We recommend placing plants out of reach if your pets like to investigate greenery.

Do I need to feed them?

Never use fertilizer — it will burn the roots. Insects caught naturally are ideal. On a windowsill without wild prey, you may occasionally offer a small live or freeze-dried insect, but most plants thrive without hand-feeding if light and water are correct.

What water should I use?

Always use distilled water, reverse-osmosis (RO) water, or clean rainwater. Tap water minerals accumulate in the substrate and will eventually kill carnivorous plants. The tray method works well for most genera we stock.

What if my plant arrives damaged?

Contact us within 48 hours of delivery with photos of the plant and packaging. See our return and refund policy for how we handle transit damage, wrong items, and replacements.

Can I visit the conservatory?

Bench visits are by appointment only so we can give your collection proper attention. Message us via the form, email info@bizarretropicals.co.za, or WhatsApp +27 72 152 7446 to plan a visit or discuss a custom order.

Do carnivorous plants need winter dormancy?

Many temperate genera (such as Sarracenia, Dionaea, and some Drosera) need a cool winter rest in South Africa. Tropical and Mexican species usually grow year-round. Check the genus care notes on each collection page and the product listing before ordering.

Which plants are best for beginners?

Look for specimens tagged Easy care (difficulty 1) such as Drosera capensis, Sarracenia hybrids, and hardy Pinguicula. Use the difficulty filter on catalog pages and start with our beginner-friendly collections before ordering rare highland Nepenthes.
